Demonstration Alert – U. S. Embassy Maseru, Lesotho

Location:  Rustenburg, Swartuggens, and Zeerust in North West Province

Event:  The U.S. Embassy would like to inform U.S. citizens of ongoing protest activity in North West Province, specifically near the towns of Zeerust, Swartruggens and Rustenburg along the N4 highway.  Roads in the area have been blocked with stones and burning tires.  Residents in these cities are protesting poor government service delivery and alleged corruption in the province.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Keep a low profile.
