The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is an innovative and independent U.S. foreign aid agency that is helping lead the fight against global poverty. Created by the U.S. Congress in January 2004, MCC is changing the conversation on how best to deliver smart U.S. foreign assistance by focusing on good policies, country ownership, and results.
The MCC and the Kingdom of Lesotho signed and successfully implemented a five-year, $362.6 million Compact to reduce poverty and increase economic growth. The Compact was focused on improving the provision of water supplies for industrial and domestic use, improving health outcomes and removing barriers to foreign and local private sector investment.
In 2013, the compact was completed. During its implementation, Lesotho was a strong partner, committing $150 million of its own funds to ensure the completion and sustainability of the projects. Subsequently, the MCC Board has selected Lesotho each year as eligible to submit a proposal for a second Compact up until the December 2015 deferred vote.
